He has published extensively on British state formation in the seventeenth century, on Jacobitism, Enlightenment and Empire in the eighteenth century and on Highland clans and clearances from the thirteenth to nineteenth centuries. He has written monographs on Charles I and the Emergence of the Covenanting Movement, 1625-41; on Clanship, Commerce and the House of Stewart, 1603-1788; on The British Revolution, 1629-61; on Union and Empire: the making of the United Kingdom in 1707; an on The British Confederate: Archibald Campbell, 1609-61.Allan I.
