The Winchester Book Gallery is the 50-year old, independent, locally owned bookstore serving the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. As a cornerstone of our community we sell new books, cards and puzzles. Our booksellers are responsible for making sure it all runs smoothly. It’s a lively work environment that offers a broad variety of tasks ranging from moving boxes of books to offering personal book recommendations. The Book Gallery regularly hosts book signings, poetry readings, live music and more. Every day, booksellers help customers find books, shelve books, maintain displays, operate cash registers, take special orders and answer phones.
The bookseller positions are part-time. All booksellers should be available to work morning, evening and weekend shifts. Booksellers must be able to stay calm under pressure, juggle many tasks, retain a lot of information, stand on their feet for up to 8 hours at a time and lift boxes of books (usually 25-30lbs each), all while maintaining a polite and professional demeanor with customers. This can be a fast-paced job. It is mentally and physically taxing. Booksellers are also heavily involved in planning, promoting and running events in the store and off site. Our ideal candidate will be: great at writing promotional materials for email, social media and our website; someone who loves reading and talking knowledgeably about books and authors with customers; interested in developing partnerships with local community organizations; able to develop and maintain an multifaceted calendar of events; and, more.
