The story of John Kirby and His Orchestra, was truly a, "A Phenomenon, Unlike Any Other in Jazz." They were affectionately known as "The Biggest Little Band in America" due to the band's unique blend of classical music and jazz, creating a new era in jazz history known as "Classic Jazz" from 1938 until 1946. Their success ultimately produced, "Night Whispers 1938-1946" which is listed on The New Yorker magazine 100 essential jazz albums list. John Kirby recorded and performed with other artist on the list including - Fletcher Henderson, Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday and Chick Webb. The book chronicles Kirby's quintessence early life in Winchester, Va., his orchestra's influential reign on the New York City jazz scene, to his untimely death (due to diabetes) in Los Angeles, Ca., in 1952.
